NEXT GENERAL MEETING:
Friday: 24th July 2026
10am. at THE WARRAWEE CLUB
Our July 2026 Guest Speaker will be John Cameron
John’s talk is entitled “AI: what can it do for you?”
“AI is the capability of computational systems to perform tasks typically associated with human
intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and decision-making.”
John has spent more than 40 years working in the computer industry, experiencing first-hand the remarkable transformations in technology over the past half-century. He is now retired but he has
never stopped learning. He has given numerous presentations on AI to many different organisations
over the last few years.
He will share his knowledge with us and explain how this technology can help us, how to use it
safely and how to incorporate it into our daily lives.
His talk covers many broad issues:
"In just a few years, artificial intelligence has moved from science fiction to everyday life. It doesn’t
think like we do, but it recognises patterns in vast amounts of data to produce useful answers. Tools like ChatGPT can write emails, summarise documents, answer questions and create images in seconds. The speed of progress has surprised even experts and raises important questions about safety, privacy and how we use this technology wisely."
It’s thought AI will change jobs enormously. There is no copyright on AI generated articles. There are also problems in education, such as universities not being able to tell if AI has been used by students. The more detail you give AI, the answer you get will be more useful but AI cannot tell you if something is true. Some of our technically-minded members will already be using ChatGPT & AI.
John says: “I’m not too worried about the advent of AI. I see AI as just another technology change.”
Should we be worried?

The Old Fish Market
On 15 May a group of nine happy snappers met at Alan's home to evaluate each others’ Fish Market photos taken the previous month. We all agreed that some truly excellent photos had been taken.
Just one of those is reproduced here to show the quality that we all aspire to.
