NEXT GENERAL MEETING:
Friday: 27th March 2026
10am. at THE WARRAWEE CLUB
Our March 2026 Guest Speaker will be Professor Geoffrey Tofler.
Geoff’s talk is entitled
“Latest Research in Acute Prevention of Heart Attacks”.
Geoff is Professor of Preventative Cardiology at the University of Sydney and a Senior Staff Cardiologist at RNSH. Geoff will be accompanied by his Senior Research Coordinator Dr Philippa Heighes.
One of our members, Chris Russell, chairs Geoff’s consultative group for his research program at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Professor Tofler spent 13 years at Harvard Medical School, where he attained the rank of Associate Professor and served as Director of the Institute for Prevention of Cardioascular Disease (CVD) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston.
Professor Tofler and his research group are leaders in their field, examining acute triggers of heart attack. They investigate additional ways to prevent heart attacks on top of managing chronic risk factors such as hypertension and high cholesterol.
His research focuses on the “triggers” of acute cardiovascular disease, such as physical exertion, emotional stress, and bereavement and the use of these as indicators to take steps to prevent a heart attack occurring. He is a global pioneer in the concept of Triggered Acute Risk Prevention (TARP) and is currently recruiting participants in a trial of the TARP program at Royal North Shore Hospital where participants carry in their wallet or handbag – a heart attack “kit” of preventative medication that is used (sachet colour indicated) under instructions from the TARP app on their phone which has been developed by the cardiology TARP team at RNSH, to prevent a heart attack from occurring after a known “trigger” event.
